Our West Coast media hits for tonight include:
- San Francisco, where Florida Danny of Niners Nation replies to my reply to his reply on my 49ers chapter in Football Outsiders Almanac 2009. There's not much else for me to say here, except that Danny's points are all eminently reasonable and absolutely worth reading.
- Houston, where the third part of our series with Stephanie Stradley revisits our look at year-to-year red zone consistency.

Re: FOA 09 MEDIA: Houston, SF Response
Is there somewhere in the book or on the site where we can see what players/teams over/under achieved the most in the red zone. This has been a hot topic in the book this year but I haven't really been able to find some good data that shows it. Maybe it is in one of the chapters that I haven't gotten to yet? Thanks in advance!

Look in the "Trends/Splits" section of each team chapter...

Me fail english, thats unpossible
Re: FOA 09 MEDIA: Houston, SF Response
Thank you, that is helpful. I had seen that but wasn't sure if there was something with the whole table put together and maybe showed how many TD's they underproduced or something. Especially for players like how it is mentioned that Steven Jackson underperformed inside the 5 and how many more TD's he would have gotten. I may be able to piece some stuff together though. Thanks for all the information.
Re: FOA 09 MEDIA: Houston, SF Response
I'm a big PFP/FOA fan but one suggestion I'd make for improvement is some roll-up tables where things like red zone performance, strategic tendencies, etc. can be viewed in one place. App B is a good start but I think it would be easier for the reader to see all the teams, not just top/bottom 10, in one place, and more sta categories.

love these city-by-city reply threads. (I take it this is the digital version of a book tour? Either way, this is more enjoyable for those of us not in a city to be visited.)

just wow.
Re: FOA 09 MEDIA: Houston, SF Response
As Steph pointed out in the comments to the previous thread on this subject, I believe you guys have yourselves done research which suggests that zone blocking teams tend to perform less well running the ball in the red zone than those with more conventional blocking schemes. It may well be the case that red zone over/under-performance does not carry over from season to season in general, but the general rule may not fully apply to the son-of-Shanahan (literally) offense used in Houston.
That said, the Texans have a very young offensive line, which should improve, and have drafted a blocking tight end, which they didn't have last year. One might hope that both of these factors point to improvement.

It's really nice to see such thoughtful and detailed engagement of FO's superb work, not just "here's what FO has to say" with oohs and aahs.
