Our Draft Coverage

On Saturday, join me and Doug Farrar at 4 PM ET as the draft begins for live coverage of the draft, along with Mike Tanier's thoughts live from the draft on behalf of the New York Times. We'll be compiling an Audibles with your help for Monday.

If you can't make our chats, discuss the draft with fellow FO readers in our new forums.

You can also check out our mock draft here.

UPDATE: Unfortunately, due to circumstances beyond our control, we're not going to have a piece from Dave Lewin on this year's quarterbacks. We'll try and re-schedule the piece for some point after the draft.

EXTRA UPDATE: If you're looking for an archive of today's chat, you can read it here.

So I flip on ESPN & NFLN and all the pundits have Pat White as a 2nd round pick. They say that some team could draft him and create a wildcat package to run 12 or so times per game. Does anybody really think that's going to happen?

Then I watch the NFLN and everybody is talking about his value, as a backup, a receiver, wildcat, he's an athlete, and then Charles Davis says that in 2 years he's going to be a starting QB in the NFL... really? Am I the only one not drunk on the Kool-aid?

If I would have told you that neither Vince Young/Matt Leinart would be starting QB's after a few years, would you believe me? but Pat White is going to be a starting QB in two years? I'd love to see the Vegas odds on that.

It almost looked like none of the pundits really BELIEVED Pat White was worth a 2nd round pick the way they all kept trying so hard to justify it.

I don't think people give White enough credit for his quarterbacking. He was a four-year starter with a 64.8 % completion percentage and 56 TDs against only 23 INTs. Just because he played in a read-option system doesn't mean he's only nominally a quarterback.

Being a "starting quarterback" in the NFL just means that you're marginally better than Shaun Hill, which isn't saying a whole lot. I don't see why White couldn't be successful in an offensive scheme that plays to his strengths.

Bill,

Since I ripped you when you used a reflexive pronoun for no good reason, I guess I should acknowledge when you resist the temptation. Thank you. That was so much more pleasant to read.

What is relflexive pronoun?

anyway, if home on Saturday will be in chat talking about drafts. Raiders looking good, good chance going to take B.J. Raji or Cravtree if fall or some one else good.

its' going to be greta draft for Raiders

Raiderjoe, relflexive pronoun is pronoun that lflexes second time. Why pronoun should do this first time, and what happened to all articles in sentence, among great mysteries of life.

More seriously, a reflexive pronoun is one that refers to itself. (An article, when the word is used to mean a part of speech, means a word that serves the function of a or the.)

its' going to be greta draft for Raiders
Doubtful. Greta Garbo doesn't want to be drafted at all; she vants to be let alone.

by erniecohen :: Fri, 04/24/2009 - 12:00pm

Um, not quite.

A reflexive pronoun is a pronoun like "itself", "himself", "ourselves", etc. Typically it is used when the subject and an object of a sentence are the same, e.g. "The Raiders have nobody to blame but themselves."

12
by the silent speaker (not verified) :: Fri, 04/24/2009 - 3:45pm

Exactly. The people doing the blaming are the same as the people the blaming is being done to.

I don't think I'd be saying that about the draft yet. Some reports have the Raiders seriously considering DHB at #7. From what I've heard scouts say, he could seriously be available when the Raiders select again in the second round. I would hope they would wait. He's not quite as risky a bet as Harvin or Britt, but he's close, and I don't really consider either of them a first round WR.

Are you guys seriously arguging grammer? Did I reach the football outsiders website or the knitting/grammer/gardening/pronoun website?

Adam - Do you feel the West Virginia offense and sideways passes ( high completion percentage) set Pat White up well for dropping back, making reads, and throwing passes downfield in the NFL?

Do you believe Pat White ( and Shaun Hill) will be starting QB's in 2 years? I would say it is much more likely than not. Pat White might not even be a QB in two years, he might be a Randel EL type player.

Not to mention that the fact that many off-topic conversations start up in the comments section is the reason this site is so great.

Come on, even Raiderjoe wasn't too ignorant to learn better grammar (he is the one who asked the question, after all).

15
by Bobman :: Fri, 04/24/2009 - 6:01pm

The breadth of knowledge and range of quirky interests among the readers at this site help make it what it is.

As RJ might say, greta!

If this was an in-game conversation about pronouns, it might be a little bothersome to the people seething over every play and call--like slow drivers on the freeway, it just gets in the way of you doing what you are supposed to be doing. But in the offseason, hell, we're just killing otherwise productive work-time, right? Might as well get edumacated at the same time! I'd have to say that 80% of my knowledge of comics and pro wrestling comes from this site. Wait, that might not be such a good thing.

Whatever; now where's the knitting thread (pun intended)? I seem to have lost it....

by Eddo :: Fri, 04/24/2009 - 6:51pm

Not arguing, just adding that it gets in the way even less with the new nested reply structure.

22
by Bobman :: Sat, 04/25/2009 - 1:14am

agreed. remember the old structure when you'd be comment 312 and refer back to #178, #244, and #301? Then somebody reading yours would have to refer back too. A half hour later, you forgot which conversation you were in.

Didn't Lewin already do a preview of this years quarterbacks in early February? Is this going to be more detailed?

I am blind, where is the transcript from the 3pm chat? Also, how do I get to the 4pm chat on Saturday?

Be sure to join a star-studded cast of your favorite FO posters for IRC draftnik chat! We're going to try #fo on cognet.catch22.org for now, since Fnor has shamefully let his server atrophy unto nothingness

brief tutorial for the IRC-shy:

- download mIRC from mirc.com

- type /server cognet.catch22.net into the status window

- type /join #fo

21
by bselig :: Fri, 04/24/2009 - 10:30pm

correction on the instructions, server is cognet.catch22.org. Did FO even have a chat today? I can't find it. If not, you're definitely want to get your fill of draft chat tomorow

IMPORTANT IRC UPDATE

Fnor has imposed his will and spirited us to his server, bendenweyr.dyndns.org, same channel. Plan your draft day accordingly

23
by Scott de B. :: Sat, 04/25/2009 - 10:23am

Yes, it looks like the chat was actually held in an undisclosed location.

25
by Drunkmonkey :: Sat, 04/25/2009 - 12:02pm

There was a link to the CoverItLive chat when it was happening, but I guess they took it down.

During the Chat, we were promised a new Lewin article by late last night. Where is it? I want something to read! ESPN isn't done cleaning the mess from all the talking heads exploding over Stafford's deal.

26
by Scott de B. :: Sat, 04/25/2009 - 12:41pm

Well, I'll first note that the message above said that the chat would be on 3 pm on the 23rd (Thursday). It was actually on Friday.

In addition, I was reading FO between 3 and 4 on Friday, and saw no link to the chat on the front page.

27
by poboy :: Sat, 04/25/2009 - 12:53pm

You didn't miss much with the chat, really.

28
by Bill Barnwell :: Sat, 04/25/2009 - 1:09pm

Guys, read the article above. Notably, the part that says UPDATE in big, bold letters.

I assure you the note never said Thursday.

by Scott de B. :: Sun, 04/26/2009 - 10:26am

You changed the text, but the original post said "Chat at 3 pm today", and the post was made on Thursday.

White's college stats destroy those of Michael Vick. Now, I wouldn't want Vick as my franchise QB, but I still believe, given the right coaching, he could be a very valuable QB.

So why is White valued so little? Is is just the arm-strength issue (i.e. Vick has an unbelievable cannon)?

32
by MC2 :: Sat, 04/25/2009 - 11:08pm

Vick is also far faster than White (or any other QB in NFL history).

Plus, teams have probably learned something from the Michael Vick Experience.
